Keyboard Settings

The ISM Keyboard Manager, allows user selectable keyboard overlays. There is a help for the currently selected keyboard overlay which can also be used for practicing the keyboard

Others

The Inscript keyboard overlay can be reconfigured by the users. It will be an alphabetic and phonetic keyboard overlay in which an ACII string of maximum 8 characters can be assigned to keys on the QWERTY overlay representing the ASCII characters. This can be done by creating a new keyboard overlay file (*.BIN) using the 'CFGKBD.EXE' DOS utility which resides in the CFGKBD sub-directory under your ISM directory. Read the CFGKBD.TXT file for more information on using the utility.

Note: Select 'INSKBD.BIN' for the standard INSCRIPT keyboard overlay and the 'PEKBD.BIN' for a Phinetic English keyboard overlay. Selecting the 'UKKBD.BIN' will enable a different Phonetic-English keyboard overlay in which typing a vowel after a consonant will be treated as a matra of that Vowel.

Keyboard Overlay

This option is used to display the keyboard overlay for the selected script. It displays the keyboard model and an edit window to display the characters that are keyed in.

Hyphenation

On-line hyphenation is available only in Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu. This has been tested and found working fine with PageMaker, MS-Word and MS-Write. It may work in other Windows applications also. In case, any application gives problem with hyphenation 'On', switch it Off.

Set Default Fonts

This option is provided so that the desired fonts get automatically selected when the script activation key (CapsLock) is toggled. With this facility one does not have to manually select the fonts when the script is changed, either to English or some other script.

This option sets the default English font and selected Script font. This default font setting remains permanent till user changes the settings again.

NOTE : 1. Automatic font switching currently will work only in following applications only.

MS-Word, WordPad, MS-Write, QuarkXPress and MS-Publisher.

2. After toggling the script activation key, automatic font switching may take some time

depending on the number of installed fonts. Do not press any key while the Wait Cursor

is being displayed.

ISM dbf Handler Utility

The ISM dbf Handler utility manipulates Indian Script database files (.dbf), created using the GIST Card/GIST Shell on DOS or using ISM on Windows. ISM dbf Handler provides you a method to do the following operations on dbf databases. This utility works on .dbf databases of Dbase,Foxpro & Foxbase on both DOS and Windows. With this utility you can

- Sort the database on a selected field

- Browse through database records for selected fields

- Create reports for importing into Windows applications like MS-Word and LEAP

- Convert DOS databases to Windows format and vice versa

The operations include:

- Sorting the ISM Windows (ISFOC) database.

- Browsing & updating the ISM Windows (ISFOC) database.

- Browsing the GIST (PC-ACII) database.

- Converting the GIST (PC-ACII) database to ISM Windows (ISFOC) database.

- Converting the ISM Windows (ISFOC) database to Gist (PC-ACII) database.

- Exporting the ISM Windows (ISFOC) database to .TXT file.

- Exporting the GIST (PC-ACII) database to .TXT file.

Cautions

* The databases should not contain memo fields.

* The same field may not contain information in English and an Indian Script although different fields may have data in English and Indian Script. i.e. every field may contain data either in English or Script but not both.

* While conversion from DOS to Windows and vice-versa, the data in the fields may exceed the field length on some cases, in which case the data will be truncated. Approximately 15% tolerance in field length is advisable but may not be always necessary.

Open Database

Select the new database file you wish to work on by clicking on Open. Once the file is selected, the utility will remember it and will automatically open this file for future sessions. The selected file name is displayed next to the Open button. You need not click on Open if you are using the same file again. Remember to select the appropriate Script & Code before opening the database.

Quit ISM dbf Handler

The Quit option saves current settings and then terminates.

Code

Before a database file is selected for manipulation, you must select data code using which the database was originally created. Once the Code has been selected, the utility will remember it for future sessions.

GIST (PC-ACII)

Select this option if the source database file was created using a GIST Card or the GIST Shell software. This file was probably created using DOS based DBMS applications.

 ISM WIN (ISFOC)

Select this option if the source database file was created on Windows with the ISM utility and Indian Script Fonts using Windows based DBMS applications.

Settings

The Settings option is used to select the fields for browse. The selection is done by using Add button which adds the field to the selected field list. Similarly the Remove button is used to deselect the field from selected field list. The Add All checkbox selects all the fields. For a bilingual database, some fields could be in English and some in the Indian script. This information needs to be provided by the user for each field so that the utility can display the data correctly. If the selected field is to be displayed in English, click on the Not Script checkbox. This facility is particularly useful when numbers need to be displayed in English and text in Indian script. The Ok button saves the settings. When the database file is re-opened, the settings are restored. The Cancel button ignores the changes made to previous settings.

Sort Database

This option sorts the script database on a single key. The Select key dialog box allows user to select a single key field from the field list. The Ascending and Descending radio boxes defines the order of sorting. The default key field is the first field in the field list and default order is ascending order. This utility does not allow to sort the source database onto itself. That is, the destination sorted database needs to be different than the unsorted source database.

Browse Database

This option allows the user to Browse through the database, one record at a time. The displayed fields are those which were selected using the Settings option. ISM-Win (ISFOC) databases may be modified while browsing. To be able to edit fields, ISM should be active. When the Browse option is selected, the utility checks if ISM is active and will load it automatically, if desired by the user. The modifications may be made permanent by clicking on the Save button.

Note: GIST (PC-ACII) databases cannot be modified.

The Forward(>>) and Reverse(<<) buttons are used to browse next & previous record respectively. The Goto button is used to locate any record of the database by specifying the record number.

 Report

This option exports the selected fields of dbf file to a TAB delimited plain text file. The TAB delimited Report file (.txt) can be imported into non-database Windows applications like wordprocessors and page layout software, for creating a column aligned reports.

Note: The report file is a plain text file and does not contain script/font information. To display data correctly in other Windows applications, you will need to select the appropriate fonts.

Convert

This option converts the GIST (PC-ACII) database to ISM Win (ISFOC) database and vice-versa. The conversion takes place depending on the Code that is selected while opening the database (i.e.) if the currently opened database is in GIST (PC-ACII) code then it is converted to ISM Win (ISFOC) database and vice-versa.

Note: In the process of conversion from one data format to another, the number of characters in a field may exceed the field length on occasion.

Conversions

ACII To ISFOC Conversion (A2IWIN).

This utility is basically used for importing multilingual text created using GIST products on DOS into Windows applications. This utility takes a ACII or a PC-ACII file and creates an ISFOC file in different formats. It can generate ISFOC files for MS-Write, Ventura(GOLD), RTF(WIN/MAC) or a Generic ISFOC file for any application using ISFOC fonts for displaying and printing.

Input File.

The full pathname of ACII/PC-ACII file should be entered in Input file edit box or should be selected with OPEN button.

Open

The Open button is used to select the ACII/PC-ACII File using File Open dialog box.

Output File

The full pathname should be entered in an Output file edit box or can be selected through Save as dialog box.

Code

The Code option is used to select ACII or PC-ACII code type for input file.

Format

The Format option is used to select the format of output ISFOC file. Some of the formats are

WRI for MS-Write

TXT for Ventura

RTF for RTF(WIN) and RTF(MAC).

Default Script

Select the default script for which the output file is to be created.

Default fonts

The Default font option is used to set the default font and point size for a script which will be used while creating the Windows format file. The default font settings are stored for future sessions. Along with the Script font, a matching English font may also be selected so that mixed language text can be correctly created.

Settings.

The SETTINGS dialog box is used to set the following parameters.

Justification.

Justification OFF is default. This button can be used for justifying the text that is created with <CR> +<LF> at the end of each line and a double <CR>+<LF> at the end of each paragraph. For files created in ALP with justified text, this option need not be selected for justified output.

Roman Capital

This option is used to set the case of a word . This option is used when the script selected is Diacritic Roman.

Upper case - All the letters of word are displayed in upper case .

Lower case - All the letters are displayed in lowercase.

Initial Caps - First letter of every word is displayed in upper case.

English Numerals.

The Indian script numerals, if present in a script font is selected by default. If this option is selected, all the numerals in the output text will be taken from matching English font. If matching English font is not present for a particular font it will take it from the Windows default font.

English Punctuations.

This is similar to that of English Numerals option, using which you can choose to use all the punctuations appearing in the output from the matching English fonts.

Multiple Character sets.

By selecting this you can convert your ACII text for a script using fonts from one or more character sets. This is applicable only for those scripts which have more than one script character set,e.g Tibetan, Vedic.

Filter ALP Dot Commands.

This option is helpful when you are converting a document typed in ALP with various dot commands. When this option is selected A2IWIN will remove all the dot commands from the converted ISFOC file. By default this feature is 'ON'.

Reduce multiple Spaces and Tabs.

For justification some DOS word processors put multiple spaces for justifying paragraphs or Tabs to position the text. During conversion these multiple spaces and Tabs can be filtered and replaced by a single space or a tab. By default this feature is 'ON'

Hyphenation

This option is valid only for Tamil,Telugu and Malayalam scripts. Hyphenation 'Off' is the default. Hyphens are put in between the syllables in aword in the Indian script text. The number in the edit box on the side of this button will decide how many ACII syllable blocks should be kept together for putting a hyphen while splitting a word when justifying text in paragraph. This value should be between 2 and 5.

ASCII to ISFOC File (DOS)

ASCII to ISFOC file conversion utility for DOS has been included for those who would like to do batch processing of files on non-Windows based systems.

RTF to HTML

RTF2HTM.EXE which creates HTML files from .RTF source files created using ISFOC TrueType fonts provided with ISM. HTML files can be viewed using Web browsers such as Internet Explorer and Netscape. RTF files can be created by most word processing software (eg WordPad) For a bilingual source RTF document, only one English font and one Script font is used in the final HTML document, even though the source document may contain more than one font for the same script. This has been done so that

only one font need be downloaded to view the document. This utility uses only TrueType fonts. The default size of the English text is +1 and that of the Script text is +2. If required, the HTML file may be edited to change the font or size using a text editor like Notepad.

RTF to ACII

RTF2ACI.EXE which can convert RTF files using ISFOC fonts to ACII(ISCII) code format. ISCII files can be imported in Apex Language Processor (ALP) in DOS and LEAP for Windows.

Configurable Keyboard

The Inscript keyboard overlay can be reconfigured by the users. It will be an alphabetic and phonetic keyboard overlay in which an ACII string of maximum 8 characters can be assigned to keys on the QWERTY overlay representing the ASCII characters. This can be done by creating a new keyboard overlay file (*.BIN) using the 'CFGKBD.EXE' utility which resides in the CFGKBD sub-directory under your ISM directory. Read the CFGKBD.TXT file for more information on using the utility.

Note: Select 'INSKBD.BIN' for the standard INSCRIPT keyboard overlay and the 'PEKBD.BIN' for a Phonetic-English keyboard overlay, which has the Indian script alphabets phonetically assigned to that of English letters on the IBM-PC QWERTY overlay. Selecting the 'UKKBD.BIN' will enable a different Phonetic-English keyboard overlay in which typing a vowel after a consonant will be treated as a matra of that Vowel. Use the Keyboard Overlay Help feature for seeing the keyboard layout.

TOP

Roman Script

The ISM supports capital and smaller case selection when typing in diacritic Roman fonts. One can also set the International Roman mode in which the 'e' and 'o' are without the diacritic marks. This mode is used by some publishers to depict some North Indian scripts.

TOP

Keyboard Tutor

ISM comes with a Inscript Keyboard Tutor (KBDTUT.EXE), which will be copied to a sub-directory called 'CFGKBD' under your ISM directory. It has lessons only for Hindi. But you can use it for practicing other scripts also, with some sample text taken from any source.

TOP

HP Mirror Utility

The HP print file mirroring utility (HPMIRWIN.EXE) is provided to print mirror output so files.

TOP

Bilingual font

Most ISM utilities now have Bi-lingual font implementation. This means that the same font contains both English and Indian language capability. It is not necessary to select a different font for English and Indian scripts. The Script toggle key will automatically switch between English and Indian Language. This facility is particularly useful in applications such as Spread Sheet and Database programs that allow only one font to be selected at a time and where bi-lingual data is to be displayed.

The font names are typically: DVB-TTSurekh for Devanagari Bi-lingual.(DVB)

Additional fonts with English Numerals have been provided in each script. The font names are typically: DVB-TTSurekhEN for Devanagari Bi-lingual English Numerals.

Note:Ensure that the bilingual option is selected in the following programs before using bilingual fonts

Enhancements to WINKBMGR

- Alternate keys for CapsLock script selection have been provided.

- Automatic font switching between English and Indian Script in MS-Word, WordPad, MS-Write, QuarkXPress and MS-Publisher.

Facility for setting default fonts for switching is also provided.

- ISM uses the MS-Word 6.0 Macro facility to provide font switching etc.

To avail of this facility, ISM must be loaded before MS-Word 6.0 The GIST-ISM menu item should appear on the MS-Word menu bar. This menu item may be used to select scripts in ISM without going to the ISM application menu. When a different script is selected, the fonts are automatically changed by ISM to match the change in script.

- Tuning - At times, ISM may not work correctly with a new Windows application or a new version of software. An example of this is when you get repeated characters while typing in Indian scripts. When such a case is encountered you may try and Tune ISM to work with the new application. To do this, change the default application category from 0 to 12 one at a time and test ISM with the application. The correct value will be stored for future reference. The default value for ISM is 0. Please report any application for which ISM cannot be tuned by the above method.
